August 1/10 Senga's Vlog - How do you harvest Broccoli?
I can't believe it is already August. It has been a dismal year in the vegetable garden this year. A cold spring and June coupled witht he fact that we live at the base of Grouse Mountain makes for cooler weather all around. We are about 3-4 weeks behind everyone else!
But now the heat is pouring and we are having endless days of sunshine. This is not good news for cool season crops such as carrots, beetroot, cauliflower, radishes, spinach, turnips, lettuces and related greens as each bolts one by one. My broccoli are growing gangbusters on the edible green roof in my square foot garden and the seem to be faring a bit better. So keeping a watchful eye on making sure these vegetables don't bolt or at least harvest them before they do up the roof I go. Broccoli is the one crop that we are harvesting steadily. Watch my vlog for signs to watch of bolting broccoli and how you can extend the harvest season on one plant.
