The Site

A 5 acre hobby farm/estate in the farming community of Pemberton complete with a 1930's restored farmhouse and 2.5 acres of horse paddocks and stables on the northern half. The southern 2.5 acres contains an existing stand of Poplars, a slough and partially excavated area used by previous owners as a personal dump.

The Challenge

The owner's wish list was to create:

  • To create a landscape which provides a focal point from the house - particularly the kitchen window?
  • Withstands yearly flooding as well as seasonal water fluctuations within the garden
  • Create a pond from the excavated area
  • Theme the landscape with an Asian flavour
  • Create a walking path around the proposed pond with an area for sitting and contemplation.

The Design

The area previously used as a dump was further excavated and refined as an informal pond. and planted with Irises, water lilies and other native water plants.

A flagstone walkway winds over a small bridge and creek and through drifts of Irises, Astilbes and other moisture loving plants along the western pond edge. Eventually it terminates into waterside dock. This area is able to be with stand the seasonal flooding without negative impact.

The balance of the landscape is planted as woodland under story and provides seasonal colour from spring to fall.
